TL;DR
In a business with two or more Claude users, choose the seat person by person: Team Standard for light and daily users, Team Premium for anyone who runs Claude Code most of the day, and Pro or Max only for someone who works alone. That settles Claude Team vs Pro for most people, because a Standard seat costs $3 a month more than Pro on annual billing and the work stays with the company.
- โ๏ธ The rule. Usage limits belong to each member and never pool, and every seat costs about the same per unit of usage. So the only waste is capacity a person doesn't use.
- ๐ฌ Light chat user. Team Standard, or Pro if they're the only Claude user in the business.
- ๐๏ธ Daily Cowork user. Team Standard plus usage credits with a monthly cap. Move them to Premium only if they hit the cap most months.
- ๐ป All-day Claude Code user. Team Premium. Max 20x is the only plan with more usage per person, and it sits outside your organization.
- ๐งพ API credits. Max gives $100 or $200 a person. Team pools $20 or $100 a seat, capped at $500. Neither buys any usage in the Claude apps or interactive Claude Code.
Limits never pool, so you choose the seat person by person
Every Claude seat carries its own usage allowance, and nobody can borrow from anyone else's. Anthropic's Team plan article says usage limits on Team "are per-member, rather than applied to the team as a whole." Chat, Cowork and Claude Code all draw from that one allowance, which resets on a five-hour window and a weekly window, per the Claude Code costs docs.
The totals for whole teams are in our guide to the Claude Team plan. For one person, divide each plan's price by how much session usage it gives compared with Pro, and almost every plan lands in the same place:
| Plan | Price per person per month | Session usage vs Pro | Cost per Pro's worth of usage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro, annual | $17 ($200 billed up front) | 1x | about $17 |
| Team Standard, annual | $20 | 1.25x | $16 |
| Team Premium, annual | $100 | 6.25x | $16 |
| Pro, Standard or Premium, monthly | $20, $25 or $125 | 1x, 1.25x or 6.25x | $20 |
| Max 5x (monthly only) | $100 | 5x | $20 |
| Max 20x (monthly only) | $200 | 20x | $10 |
Prices and multipliers are from Claude's pricing page and the help center as of today. Anthropic states the multipliers per session and doesn't publish weekly limits as multiples, so treat the last column as session math, not a guarantee.
On annual billing, a Premium seat is five Standard seats' worth of usage in one person's name, at the same rate. The bigger seat isn't a discount. It's capacity that pays off only if that one person uses it, because nobody else can. Only Max 20x gets cheaper per unit as it grows.
Here is how that works out for three common usage patterns:
| Usage pattern | What their week looks like | Seat | Per month (annual) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light chat user | Drafts emails, asks questions, reads a few files, rarely sees a limit | Team Standard | $20 |
| Daily Cowork user | Runs Cowork tasks every day with Drive and Gmail connected, plus a weekly scheduled report; runs out some afternoons | Team Standard plus capped usage credits | $20 plus up to the cap |
| All-day Claude Code user | Claude Code open in a terminal most of the working day, long sessions, subagents | Team Premium | $100 |
Claude Team vs Pro for a light user
A light user belongs on Team Standard if anyone else in the business uses Claude, and on Pro only if they work alone. On annual billing, Standard costs $20 against Pro's $17. The extra $3 a month gets them 1.25x Pro's session usage, and their Projects and skills stay with the company if they leave. A Team plan needs at least two members, so one person on their own can't buy it.
A light user won't notice the extra 25%. What they get from Team is the company's shared Projects, connectors and skills. On monthly billing the gap is $5 ($25 against $20).
One thing doesn't change between these two plans. Neither Pro nor a Standard seat includes Anthropic's Fable models in its usage limits. Both can use them only through pay-as-you-go usage credits, per Anthropic's Fable models article.
The daily Cowork user: Standard plus capped usage credits
A daily Cowork user should start on Standard with usage credits turned on and a monthly cap of their own. Usage credits are billed at API rates and let a member keep working in Claude, Cowork and Claude Code after their seat runs out. An Owner sets one limit for the whole organization and another for each person. Move the member to Premium only if they hit their cap most months.
This is the person running Cowork workflows every day, such as the month-end close and invoice chasing in Claude for Small Business. Cowork draws from the same seat allowance as chat, so they reach the limit sooner. Anthropic's usage credits article has the controls:
- ๐ An Owner or Primary Owner turns them on under Organization settings, then Usage, for specific people or the whole organization.
- ๐ณ Owners can pre-purchase credits and set an auto-reload amount.
- ๐งฎ "Spend limits by user" sets each member's monthly cap. A member who reaches it is paused until the end of the month, or until an Owner raises it.
- โ ๏ธ The limit is checked before each request and tokens are counted after, so a member can go slightly over.
The number that decides it is $80. On annual billing, Premium costs $80 a month more than Standard, the same difference Anthropic uses in its billing examples. If someone's overflow costs less than $80 in a month, credits are cheaper. If it costs more every month, Premium is cheaper.
There is also a timing reason to start with credits. Moving a member from Standard to Premium is charged right away, prorated. Moving them back down only takes effect at your next renewal, which on an annual plan is the annual renewal date, with no prorated refund, per Anthropic's seat management article. On annual billing, an upgrade commits you to that extra $80 a month until renewal.
So test it before you commit:
- Leave the member on Standard and turn on usage credits for them, with a monthly cap of $80.
- Check the spend report in your organization's analytics each month. It shows estimated usage-credit spend per user and per model, with a CSV export.
- After two or three months, move them to Premium if they hit the cap most months. If not, leave them where they are.
The all-day Claude Code user: Team Premium, unless they work alone
Someone who runs Claude Code most of the day needs Team Premium. On annual billing it gives 6.25x Pro's session usage for $100. Max 5x costs the same $100 for 5x, monthly only. Max 20x, at $200, is the only plan with more usage per person than Premium, but it's an individual consumer plan, outside your organization's controls and Projects.
Coding uses far more than chat does. Anthropic's costs docs say to budget more for a coding seat than a chat seat, because "one debugging session can consume more than a day of chat." The same page puts the average across enterprise deployments at about $13 per developer per active day at API rates. At that rate, the $80 that turns a Standard seat into Premium covers about six days of Claude Code on usage credits. For someone coding every day, Premium is the cheaper way to buy the same usage.
| Team Premium, annual | Team Premium, monthly | Max 5x | Max 20x | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price per month | $100 | $125 | $100 | $200 |
| Session usage vs Pro | 6.25x | 6.25x | 5x | 20x |
| Fable models | Up to 50% of weekly limits | Up to 50% of weekly limits | Up to 50% of weekly limits | Up to 50% of weekly limits |
| Monthly API credits | $100, into the team pool | $100, into the team pool | $100 | $200 |
| Work belongs to | The organization | The organization | The individual | The individual |
Fable can decide this on its own. Premium seats and Max include Fable 5 and Fable 5.1, and members can spend up to half their weekly limits on them at no extra cost. A Standard seat gets Fable only through usage credits. So someone who needs Fable regularly, even at modest volume, may be better on Premium.
Max 20x makes sense for one person: a founder or contractor working alone who regularly needs more than Premium's 6.25x. Anthropic's Max plan article says it is written for individual consumers and points organizations to Team and Enterprise. Inside a team, a Premium seat is the top of the range, and anything past it runs on usage credits at API rates.
If your developers work from a shared setup, written conventions matter more than seat size. We documented ours in compound engineering for Claude Code.
Max's API credits vs Team's pooled credits
Neither kind of API credit buys more chat, Cowork or Claude Code usage. Max gives each subscriber $100 (5x) or $200 (20x) a month. Team gives $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled into one balance capped at $500 a month. Both work only on the Claude Platform, for building with the API.
Anthropic's monthly API credits article sets the rules:
| Max | Team | |
|---|---|---|
| Amount | $100 (5x) or $200 (20x) per person | $20 per Standard seat, $100 per Premium seat |
| Pooled | No, each subscriber has their own | Yes, one balance for the organization |
| Cap | None beyond the plan amount | $500 a month |
| Who claims | The subscriber, under Settings, then Billing | An Owner or Primary Owner, under Organization settings, then Billing |
| Works with | Claude API, Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents, Claude Agent SDK | Same |
| Doesn't work with | Interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web, or extra usage in the Claude apps | Same |
| Expiry | End of each billing cycle, no rollover | Same |
A Premium seat brings the same $100 as Max 5x, but into a pool the Owner controls. When someone joins a Team on their Max email and chooses to move their personal account in, the Max subscription is canceled and its credits stop, per the account migration guide. If they keep the two accounts separate, nothing moves between them. And the cap arrives early: five Premium seats or 25 Standard seats already make $500, and past that an extra seat adds nothing.
If nobody in the business builds on the API, leave the credits out of the seat decision entirely.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Pro or Team better?
For a business with two or more Claude users, Team is better. A Standard seat costs $3 a month more than Pro on annual billing, gives 1.25x Pro's session usage, and keeps Projects, skills and connectors with the company. For one person working alone, Pro is simpler, and Team needs at least two members anyway.
How much is Claude Pro for Teams?
There is no Pro for Teams. The equivalent is a Team Standard seat at $20 per person per month on annual billing or $25 monthly, with 1.25x Pro's session usage. Heavy users can get a Premium seat at $100 annual or $125 monthly. Prices are US and exclude tax.
What is the difference between Claude Team Standard and Premium?
Premium gives five times a Standard seat's usage: 6.25x Pro per session against 1.25x. It also includes Fable models up to half the weekly limit, which Standard gets only through usage credits. On annual billing Premium costs $80 a month more. Both include Claude Code and Cowork.
Is a Claude Team Premium seat better than Max?
For someone inside a team, yes. Premium on annual billing gives 6.25x Pro for $100, against 5x for $100 on Max 5x, and the work stays in the organization. Max 20x gives more usage, 20x for $200, but it is an individual plan with no admin controls.
Is the $200 Claude plan worth it?
Max 20x is worth it for one person who works alone and regularly needs more than 6.25x Pro's usage, usually all-day Claude Code. At $10 per Pro's worth of session usage, it is the cheapest plan per unit. Inside a team, Premium plus capped usage credits keeps the work in one organization.
Do Claude Team members share usage limits?
No. Each member has their own five-hour and weekly limits, and they can't be pooled or transferred. A light user's unused capacity does nothing for a heavy user. To give one person more, move them to Premium or turn on usage credits with a cap of their own.
Do Max or Team API credits work in Claude Code?
Not in interactive Claude Code. The monthly API credits on Max and Team work on the Claude Platform: the API, Console Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK. They don't cover Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web, or extra usage in the Claude apps.
Does a Team Standard seat include Fable?
No. Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 aren't included in Standard seat or Pro usage limits, so those users can only reach them through usage credits. Premium seats and Max plans include them, with up to half the weekly limit available for Fable models at no extra cost.
